If you look through my previous posts, you'll see a long list of articles relating to business in general. Well, I've decided to start over. I'm not deleting those old posts, though - they're a part of my journey. Instead, I'm recreating this website as a blog. What's my goal? Well, I want to document some of the things going on in my life, but I suppose it will serve as edutainment for other millennial moms.
When I first heard the term "millennial", I had no clue that I was one of them. As I was beginning my work-at-home, stay-at-home mom journey, I was sifting through articles for statistics when I found an article about millennials. In this article, the author wrote about how the workforce was changing, and how millennials were doing everything differently - from investments to careers.
Let's back up a bit.
My name is Heather Hawkins, and I'm a mom, classical educator, small business owner, and copywriter. I have two young children - ages 5 and 2 at the time of this writing - and I homeschool both of them. We're part of a homeschool community called Classical Conversations, where I tutor a small class of 5-year olds (including my oldest). I own a company called Hawkins Copywriting (hawkinscopywriting.net), and I'm a copywriter who specializes in press releases. I love marketing! Plus, I'm able to work from home and be with my kids - that's a huge deal to me!
Through my research, I found that it's a big deal to other millennials, too. If you're a millennial mom (or dad), and you're thinking that there must be some better way to balance life than with a 40+ hour per week job and perhaps even sending your kids off to daycare/school, then you're right - and you're not alone.
What I found through my research is that millennials want a different lifestyle - they want true work/life balance.
When my first child was born, I became a stay-at-home mom. It was such a difficult decision because I truly loved my job. I loved my little girl more, though. When she was about 6 months old, I began to research work-at-home opportunities.
I found scam after scam after scam. It was so disappointing. I was very discouraged! Then, I finally found a good one. I started working from home with a company called Ameriplan. I learned the ins and outs of network marketing, and I realized that I absolutely loved marketing. I started writing resumes on the side, and before I knew it, I was writing press releases. 2.5 years later, and I'm solely copywriting. I departed Ameriplan after my second child was born, but I'll always be grateful for the experience I had with the company.
So, what's this blog going to be about? Something about starting over, right?
Well, yes and no.
To make a long story short, I want to better document what I'm up to as I go through another life transition. I'm not going to delve terribly far into the specifics of this transition - we'll save that for another time - but things are definitely changing. If you want to know what the life of a stay-at-home, work-at-home mom is really like, then check back to see what I'm up to. I hope to share tips, tricks, and strategies for success along with some tidbits from my daily life.
Well, it's getting late - for me, anyway. Goodnight!
